There has been a football team in the village for as long as most people can remember. In common with many local, grass roots football teams Lyng have suffered from a lack of facilities making it difficult to gain entrance to the higher leagues (Anglian Combination).
While there was an abundance of players this was never a problem but with the lower numbers of players now wishing to be involved we were very vulnerable to “bigger” teams poaching our better players.
We decided prior to the start of the 2012/13 season to merge with North Elmham so that out of the three teams we had between us two of these would keep going allowing local lads to continue to play regular football. This decision was made with a heavy heart but on the understanding that the North Elmham reserve team would play their home games in Lyng. Sadly this never came to fruition and football was lost to the village for two years.
During that time myself, Richard Mant and a few other ex-players talked about getting the club up and running again on a regular basis. In May this year I decided that the time was right to try and reform the team so, with Steve Abbott on-board as manager (on the proviso that we played in Coventry City Sky Blue) and Richard installed as club captain, Lyng United FC was reborn – all we needed next was some players…!
The Fox @ Lyng and Flood Ark were approached for sponsorship of the club and on the May 30 we held a meeting to determine if we thought that there was enough interest in the team reforming to give it a go; we applied to the North East Norfolk league for acceptance and registered ourselves with the Norfolk FA – thankfully there was a resounding vote of confidence in the team and we had more than enough players register their interest to play to encourage us to move forward. New goals were put in place and the pitch moved and straightened out, something which we hope will be of benefit to the village as a whole – and at no cost to them either.
After some mixed results in the first few friendly games, our proper season started in early September and we haven’t looked back since. Playing good passing football with the emphasis on going forwards we have not lost a game so far during this season and everyone is obviously enjoying being part of the club.
One of the main factors in getting the team back together (apart from the football) was to provide a platform for people from the village and surrounding areas to be able to play decent 11-a-side football and to foster an atmosphere within the club that would encourage as many people to join in as possible. We hope that the style of football we play as well as the social aspect of the club will mean that people will enjoy being involved with Lyng FC and that we can move up the leagues, get some better changing facilities, and eventually gain entry to the Anglian Combination.
