Above from left shows: early 20th century with no tree; late 20th century with the fairly new tree; early 21st century pretty much as now
Two trees and two ways of looking at the problem
What we have here are two ways of seeing the issue facing Lyng.
On the left is our tree as it now is and roughly sized to match the more mature tree, photographed at Heydon. That is nearly full grown and more than twice the height and width of our tree. Ours is about 40 years old and that at Heydon is approximately 80-90. Chestnuts' grow to 25 metres or about 85 feet at maturity and live up to 300 years and more..
On the right we have taken an image of the Heydon tree and put it on the Lyng green. The scale is very rough but the lines drawn on the image show where the top and sides of the existing tree are now. What it helps to show is that in due course the Lyng tree is going to be very big indeed. In fact if anything the left image is under sized; checking the height of the Lyng tree suggests the Heydon tree is actually bigger than the right hand image suggests. NB: The bit of tree to the right would in fact be behind the building not in front as shown here.
Whichever, the issue facing Lyng PC is apparent. We await the Breckland Tree Officer's adjudication with interest.
