Wensum Valley Handbells
Formed in 2000 and currently with nine members, the group has 30 bells, covering over two octaves.
They play music in all styles - folk, jazz, classical, musicals etc. Lindy McHugh writes: "We are especially busy in the weeks leading up to Christmas playing carols and Christmassy-themed pieces such as "Walking in the air", "White Christmas", "Rudolph the red nosed reindeer"etc.
"By the time New Year comes we have heard more than enough carols to last for many a month and we enjoy a month's break in January to recharge our batteries! Last year we were very busy, playing at places such as residential homes and social groups. We have played at National Trust properties, and have travelled far and wide, for example to entertain a U3A group at March, in Cambridgeshire and to play for visitors to Christmas events at Fairhaven Pleasure Gardens."
They give a performances of between 20 minutes and an hour and are very happy for audiences to join in and sing ( it also helps to cover any dud notes, which can occasionally slip in!) Sometimes people want to 'have a go' and it is gratifying to note that it is not as easy as it looks!
They practice once a week, on a Tuesday afternoon and are always pleased to hear of anybody who may be interested in joining. The essentials are that you should be able to read music and be able to attend practises each week.
