Whitwell Common- about 2 miles from the Fox at Lyng
Arguably the most delightful of our walks, Whitwell Common is a spring fed valley fen in the Blackwater tributary of the river Wensum.
It is situated approx 2 miles to the south west of Reepham (Grid Reference TG088206) and covers approx 20 ha. Designated a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) in 1965, it is one of the few remaining open fen habitats typical of Norfolk river valleys.
Until the 1930s local graziers and the retained "hayward" maintained the open habitat and gained benefit from the common.
BE WARNED: In winter and after rain it can be VERY wet - wellies advised!
Charmingly Google gives the address as "Unnamed Rd” - well, it might be Nowhere Lane but it is Whitwell Road really!
